I was wondering who was the nuttiest member of our congress. Sheesh, it's hard to decide. But I have nailed it down to a few. There is Michelle Bachman, congresswoman from Minnesota and Senators Tom Coburn and James Inhofe, both of Oklahoma. It is a sad commentary that 2/3 of the people who are the biggest nuts in congress are from one state and representatives of that whole state. Oklahomans can't blame one district for their nutty representatives as Minnesota can with Bachman. Now, if by chance you are from Oklahoma and agree that these two are nuts, why did you allow them to get elected?
Tom Coburn stated about gays and lesbians: "The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power ... That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today." I don't know about you but I think Al Qaeda is a greater threat to the US then gay men and women who want to marry, for example. I think people who want to fly airplanes into buildings might be a bit more of a priority for the government to watch, but that's just me, a bleeding heart progressive. Coburn favors the death penalty for doctors who perform abortions (even if performed to save the life of the mother) under any circumstances. Coburn, who is also a medical doctor by the way, has performed abortions. Does he believe that he, himself, should have been executed?! Look, I don't like abortions but without the right to an abortion then we as a society have back alley abortions in many states as they once existed. Thousands of women either died or suffered big medical injuries or were even raped by the quacks who performed them.
But let's explore his fellow Senator from Oklahoma before we pass judgement. What about James Inhofe? Well, Sen.inhofe took the gay bashing to a whole new level. He said he was proud there weren't gay members in his family. Yes, he said that. That's kind of like saying you are proud that you have no African American ancestors, which was ironically something that some people on the far right once said. He stated, "My wife and I have been married 47 years. We have 20 kids and grandkids. I’m really proud to say that in the recorded history of our family, we’ve never had a divorce or any kind of homosexual relationship."
I am not sure if Inhofe gave a survey to all his kids and grandkids to be sure about this. Did he play Elton John music and see if they nodded their heads to the tune? Maybe he has no gay or bisexual kids or grandkids but with every generation the odds of him having a gay great or great-great grandkid goes up. It's just a matter of mathematical probablity. Now, will Senator Inhofe love this kid (if he is still alive then) less the other children? If he will love them just as much, why does it matter if they are gay? Frankly, if you were a gay grandkid, would you come out to gramps? For all the negative things said about Dick Cheney (a conservative's conservative) at least he embraced his gay daughter and takes pride in her and is not ashamed she is gay.
What about Michelle Bachmann? She stated in an interview with Chris Matthews last year when asked how many people she suspected to be un-American? "What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think people would love to see an expose like that."
It seems like Joe McCarthy was reborn, got much more attractive and moved across the border to Minnesota. Now, does Bachmann believe that Pat Roberston or Jerry Falwell, who stated that the devastation of hurricane Katrina was because a deity took his hand of protection away from America because of its' tolerance of gays, atheists, feminists etc are and (in the case of Falwell were), un-American? They apologized but only under political pressure. No, she probably agrees with much of what they have said and is a Pat Roberston supporter for the most part.
Those who have voted for Bachmann (at least her hardcoare supporters) are probably supporters of Pat Roberston. Did Pat Roberston and Falwell agree with their deity that it was a good thing to punish the US? Probably, because they are of the school to never question a supposed deity and the devastation he might cause. So, is not Pat Roberston (and before he died) Jerry Falwell the biggest anti-Americans that the US has produced?
Bachmann, like many on the far right, forget that we are a nation founded upon dissent. The right to disagree with one's government and that does not just mean when a democrat is in office like Clinton or Obama but when a republican one like Bush, is in office. So, after much thought I will say it is a 3 way tie, but depending on the nutty comments that come out of their mouths in the coming years, I am ready to reward the prize.
