Overall Tele-Density in India Reaches 42.27 by end of August 2009

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 494.07 Million at the end of August-09 as compared to 479.07 Million in July. With this the overall tele-density reaches 42.27. According to the monthly summary of TRAI,It registered a growth rate of 3.13 percent during the month.

The Wireless subscriber base which includes GSM, CDMA & FWP increased to 456.74 Million at the end of August-09 from 441.66 Million in July, registering growth rate of 3.42 percent. Wireless tele-density stands at 39.08.

The Wireline subscriber base continued to decline from 37.41 Million in July-2009 to 37.33 Million at the end of August-09. Though BSNL/MTNL,the PSU Operators have lost 0.14 Million subscribers in the month of August-09, they still own 85.80 percent of the market share. However, the major private wireline service providers have increased their subscriber base. Wireline tele-density stands at 3.19.

The Total Broadband (¡Ý 256 Kbps download) subscriber base has reached 6.98 million in August registering a growth of 2.65 percent during the month which was 6.80 million in previous month. (EOM)
