Massive Floods Spark Widespread Death, Destruction in South

What does Obama, a potatoe, and Letterman have in common? Lack of awareness of what is going on in the nation!

In case they have been too self absorbed lately, I'll fill them in with some bit of news. Everything is under water in the South, Georgia being the worst hit. Nine fatalities have been reported thus far. Even Six Flags has become Six Oceans. Interstate 20 west of Atlanta was closed for a few hours during the rush hour frenzy today. I-75 in Houston County in central Georgia was also reported to be closed earlier today. Hundreds of roads and overpasses are indefinately closed as they have been washed out or destroyed. Seventeen bridges in Georgia are now a complete loss. (see video)

Gov. Sonny Perdue has asked President Barack Obama to declare a state of emergency in Georgia and urged residents to stay away from flooded areas. Perhaps when Obama is through with tours to the Letterman Show and others, he will have time to address the devestating catastrophy in the South.

Countless retirement homes, full of helpless, elderly patients have been evacuated, as far as Tennessee. At least one of the patients can't be found in the bellowing waters. (see photo slideshow)

As much as a foot of rain fell over parts of the Atlanta area Monday. The town of Dallas northwest of Atlanta had 16 inches in a 48-hour period, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said.

About 12,000 Georgia Power customers were without power still. Scattered outages were also reported in North Carolina. Officials are urging people to not return to their homes and not drive on the roadways, as most of the recorded deaths so far have been because people didn't head their advice. (see video)

Dozens of roads remained closed in western North Carolina and several small landslides were reported. Officials said the flooding there was the worst since remnants of hurricanes Frances and Ivan came through in 2004. This flood comes after years of severe drought that has devesatated residents in the opposite direction. The entire region has received steady rain for nearly a week. Rain continues to fall as I write this article.

One of the many worries is that the Chattahoochee River will regurgitate it's swollen waters into the coal ash ponds nearby, sending tons of coal ash into adjacent neighborhoods, a huge toxic mess.

Where is President Obama? Where is the campaign promise to answer the call at 3 am? These people are dying and need your help. They need the national dollars, not the corrupt Wall Street Bankers! If our President saw these horrific videos, he would be broken and and devestated. Get off Letterman's couch Obama and address these people's needs quickly and effectively. That's what the taxpayers pay you to do and why they voted you into office!

This is sad news. That's too much water to handle. Condolences to the friends and families of the victims who have died. They must be devastated. Hopefully some serious action is taken right away to help the people and prevent further damage. Please keep us updated.

How devastated these folk must feel, it must be terrible to face such weather conditions as one does not know how long the rain will continue.
I hope the President moves quickly to help these people and any animals that are being affected.
Our thoughts and prayers go to all.

Letterman is an idiot who opens his mouth but doesn't know what he is talking about. 23/9/2009.

This proves that Pres. Obama only helped the people of Iowa last year just for political reasons.

President Obama has stated he's going to take prompt action in making sure Georgia receives funding. Unfortunately, nine people died in the floods but I wouldn't consider that widespread.

yes, but one death is far too many. The President needs to stop promoting his crapy agendas and focus on leading our nation. He seems to be taking his job as a personal gain, not a selfless act to serve hurting people.

The president has given, as far as I know, all 17 counties in GA recovery money. I live in one of those counties, Cobb county but I was not hit with flooding. I did though donate some baby items and a blanket to those in need though. It is still really bad and we had more rain over the weekend. More rain is exsected on Friday of this week too. I just feel so sorry for those who have to go through this and those who have worked so hard to get there house looking better that the rain has not really given them a break to clean up more mess.

I've read that, too mother.. thanks for the update though.. :)

No problem... Cleaning up all this mess will more than likely take months before they are completly done and some flood insureances wont cover the victims as well. I think flood insureance should cover the dissaster just as long as you have proff of it and just as long you have it you should not have to worry about paying out of pocket.
