And I say to David Paterson, switch parties like Arlen Specter and the hell with the polls. Do not let your political future be decided by one man.
In funny & unexpected twist of fate, Democratic New York Governor David Paterson's political life has just been put on life support by Barack Obama & a few gyrating polls.
Based on polling information that shows the troubled Governor trailing by double digits & an approval rating in the low 20's, Barack Obama has done a 360 on polling data and now by his very own comments admits there may be merit to them. It was earlier this year that
President Barack Obama was dismissing the recent stock market plunge as a mere "gyration," which is similar to a daily tracking poll on a political campaign:
"And, you know, the stock market is sort of like a tracking poll in politics. It bobs up and down day to day, and if you spend all your time worrying about that, then you're probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong."
Well it seems that the President has been worrying about the long term strategy of having David Paterson become Governor of NY for another term.
Mr. Obama’s political team and other party leaders have grown increasingly worried that the governor’s unpopularity could drag down Democratic members of Congress in New York, as well as the Democratic-controlled Legislature, in next fall’s election.
The intervention was orchestrated by a ruthless Obama who has his own ambitions and second term in the White House set in stone - felt the gyrations in the market were just about right for a sell-off. Paterson, only 1 of 2 African American Governors in the US, dispelled the walking orders and intends to run in the fall.
With Republican Rudy Guliani lurking in the background as a possible Gubernatorial candidate, Democrats need to have astrong candidate if they are to send another to Gracie Mansion.
If I were David Paterson, I would pull an Arlen Specter move and switch parties. If I were Paterson I would run as Republican and put Guliani on the ticket. It would be a win-win for everyone. Paterson gets to tell Obama, thanks but no thanks, and Paterson would put his political fate in the hands of voters instead of the gyrations of a poll.
