Obama Listens To Polls, Asks NY Governor Not To Run.

And I say to David Paterson, switch parties like Arlen Specter and the hell with the polls. Do not let your political future be decided by one man.

In funny & unexpected twist of fate, Democratic New York Governor David Paterson's political life has just been put on life support by Barack Obama & a few gyrating polls.

Based on polling information that shows the troubled Governor trailing by double digits & an approval rating in the low 20's, Barack Obama has done a 360 on polling data and now by his very own comments admits there may be merit to them. It was earlier this year that

President Barack Obama was dismissing the recent stock market plunge as a mere "gyration," which is similar to a daily tracking poll on a political campaign:

"And, you know, the stock market is sort of like a tracking poll in politics. It bobs up and down day to day, and if you spend all your time worrying about that, then you're probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong."

Well it seems that the President has been worrying about the long term strategy of having David Paterson become Governor of NY for another term.

Mr. Obama’s political team and other party leaders have grown increasingly worried that the governor’s unpopularity could drag down Democratic members of Congress in New York, as well as the Democratic-controlled Legislature, in next fall’s election.

The intervention was orchestrated by a ruthless Obama who has his own ambitions and second term in the White House set in stone - felt the gyrations in the market were just about right for a sell-off. Paterson, only 1 of 2 African American Governors in the US, dispelled the walking orders and intends to run in the fall.

With Republican Rudy Guliani lurking in the background as a possible Gubernatorial candidate, Democrats need to have astrong candidate if they are to send another to Gracie Mansion.

If I were David Paterson, I would pull an Arlen Specter move and switch parties. If I were Paterson I would run as Republican and put Guliani on the ticket. It would be a win-win for everyone. Paterson gets to tell Obama, thanks but no thanks, and Paterson would put his political fate in the hands of voters instead of the gyrations of a poll.

"Paterson, only 1 of 2 African American Governors in the US"

What's that got to do with it?

    A,

You can ask the NYT about that. The bigger issue here is that why should he be meddling around in the Governors political future? It seems the Democrat brand is becoming more toxic by the day and that in part is a testament to the job Obama has done to date. In anything he should be out there campaigning for the guy. After all, he crossed the river to and came over to my state of NJ and helped raise funds for a Governor that is alos trailing badly in the polls to a Republican.

    I'm asking you...you wrote it.

It's ok to support a Governor but not okay to not support one?

    a,

You are missing the bigger point. That the President should not be meddling in the careers of other politicians. It jsut raises a lot of questions. It's not about whether it's ok to endorse one but not ok if he doesn't endorse. I don't mind help with raising campaign funds, but publicly calling for somone not to run has no place in that states governor's race.

It seemed to be significant when people were talking about the Presidential elections... why not for the gubernatorial elections as well? Why would Obama ask a man who is representative of a minority breakthrough to power, of which he should be proud and supportive, to stand down?

    F,

Part of Paterson's low approval can be traced to the fact that Democratic brand is becoming more toxic as a result of the policies that Obama is pushing. If anything, Obama should be out there campaigning for the guy and showing support. He didn't have an issue coming to NJ and raising funds for another Democratic Governor in trouble - Jon Corzine. Jon Corzine of Goldman Sachs who's net worth is close to 300 million and can get by running his campaign with his own money.

Gov. Paterson has done a magnificent job after all of the mess former Gov. Eliot Spitzer had done. The damage control that he had to do after that bumbling idiot has been awesome.

    Ahol888,

He did step into a difficult situation and for a while he was riding the wave of good will. But some of the disapproval has been a result of self inflicted tabloid fodder. the overall disenchanment with the Democratic party in general has created some of it as well. It's going to be a tough haul for him, but i think if Obama would have signaled that he was backing him, it at least would have been a fight.

It wasn't publically Red, it was leaked to the press and then became public. Obama did it indirectly and discreetly, it just ended up in the press anyway.

And fireisle, it doesn't matter if the dude is a minority, if he is not a good leader then why shouldn't Obama tell him that he thinks that he shouldn't run again.
