A 60 year old American woman has regained her eyesight after 9 years of blindness after doctors performed a surgery on her eye in Miami, Florida. Sharron Thornton, who is a grandmother, had lost her sight 9 years back after she contracted the Steven-Johnsons syndrome which scarred her cornea.
She has become the first person ever to have her eyetooth implanted and regain her eyesight through such a surgery. The doctors performed the surgery in phases. Initially, her tooth and lens were implanted under her skin for two months so that they could bond. After that, they were implanted in the centre of her eye in a socket that was prepared after a series of procedures. Sharron realised that she could see when doctors put antibiotics in her eye and she was able to see that the liquid in her eye was yellow. She was able to recognize faces and objects within a few hours of the bandages being removed and after two weeks, she was able to read the newspaper.
She described the regaining of her eyesight as a 'miracle'."I'm looking forward to seeing my seven youngest grandchildren for the first time," she said.
