The First Lady Joins the Cause to Help Push Health Care Reform in ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The White House is counting on First Lady Michelle Obama to help push health care reform in America. She gave her first speech on Friday in Washington. The goal is to win over women's groups and activists and make people realize what it means for their families. She's a popular figure in America, and the White House is hoping she will make a difference in whether or not health care reform takes place.

The First Lady told the mostly female audience, "If we want to achieve true equality for women ...if we want to ensure that women have opportunities that they deserve...if we want women to be able to care for their families and pursue things that they could never imagine, then we have to reform this system."

The First Lady will speak at more health care events in the month of October in the Washington area. She is a much welcome addition as the President does everything in his power to get the bill passed this fall.

Do you think Michelle Obama's campaigning can make a difference in health care reform taking place in America? Please let us hear your comments.

The First Lady has a definite fan-base. Sure, there are plenty of people in the country who will listen to her and agree with her thoughts on health care.

Thanks for your feedback cavealector. I hope she's able to make a difference in a positive direction. I currently have ZERO health insurance and it's not a comfortable feeling.

WordSlinger, I appreciate you and thank you for another great article! I, too, am one of over 40 million uninsured Americans so I empathize with your situation and how vulnerable you must feel. Frankly, I have found avoiding doctors and medicines and eating wholesome food actually keeps me healthy, but without insurance I worry about accidents or catastrophic illness. For me, there can be no health care reform without making insurance and affordable health care available to every citizen and I frankly don't see that outcome in the current "health care reform congressional circus act." WordSlinger, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay positive.

WordSlinger, I'm in the same situation as you are regarding health insurance and I know exactly what you mean. Something interesting happened to my neighbor who once said he and his family have "the best" health insurance. He hurt his back very badly last month and since it was on a weekend, he went to the ER of the hospital just 2 miles away. When he got his statement from his "best health insurance" company, they didn't pay any of his expenses. A little over $800. The reason was, the hospital he went to was not in "the network." Had he driven 20 miles more, he would have gone to one of the "network" hospitals and they would have covered most of the expenses.

WordSlinger,

Unless she has something new to bring to the table that the President has not said already, she will have very little sway over the general populus.

Don't forget, Reform means Reform. It does not mean that you will be able to get it for free. You will still have to pay for it.Reform aims to address pre-existing conditions, lower cost, imoprove quality of service.

On the other hand, if there is a Public Option or government run component, it will mean rationing, reduction of services for Seniors and mandates on people to carry insurance. 85% of the Healthcare system in this country works very well. We should not be trying to scrap the entire sysytem to fix 15% of it.

Redhanded101,

I vehemently disagree. The entire healthcare system should be "forklift" scrapped and fixed. There is no focus on well-being, just high cost procedures, drugs that cause more harm than good, and corporations that profit from making and keeping us sick. You seem like a very intelligent and articulate individual, but sometimes when you open your mouth and spew your rhethoric I think you're from another planet.

With utmost respect and sincerity,

If she have the will to help, she can certainly do so, besides she have all the access to this successfully...

Wordslinger, Michelle Obama should be able to appeal to women and mothers, because she can empathize with them. Also, she worked as a hospital administrator, so she has a basic understanding from that side of the fence.

The Obama administration has learned from the mistakes that Bill and Hillary made, and have been very careful not to go out and tag-team each other on the subject.

Michelle is an articulate intelligent woman, who is a Harvard graduate and an attorney, and she is very popular. The administration is wise to allow her to appeal to parents and families on how important health care reform is--so I believe she has a lot of positive things to bring to the table. Will it be enough? That's the million dollar question.

Bill Clinton tried the same thing with Hillary, and it was a dismal failure. I don't see Michelle Obama having any more success. She'll draw crowds from groups that already agree with her, but little else.

Personally, I think she comes off as being cold, aloof, and an elitist, a kind of Marie Antoinette who is totally out of touch with the problems of less fortunate people.

It's great that she's getting more involved in helping solve the issue. She's obviously a very powerful figure who has the ability to make a meaningful contribution. Health care has waited too long. Hopefully there is progress soon.

I think she will be a positive force, but until the rules of the public option are re-written he will not get the support he needs, as it stands now it has the potential of crippling the insurance companies and further crippling our economy. I think most would agree with health reform, but a few things need to be changed before he gets approval.

Thanks for most all of your great comments. I think it's a good move on the part of the White House to get Michelle out their talking to the women who are the main caretakers in our homes. Her ratings are higher than her husband Obama. I remember back in the days when I had health insurance. They took a nice chunk out of every paycheck and I usually had to co-pay. In the long run, it wasn't anywhere close to being free. Even with so called "health insurance" coverage, the service was HORRIBLE. The long wait to get in to see a doctor defeated the purpose. For me, I can't recall having any good experiences with my health coverage. I don't bother going to doctors anymore, it's not worth the humiliation and/or aggravation.

Nobody can help push healthcare through. Pres. Obama is throwing his wife under the bus just like former Pres. Clinton did to Hillary. The Senate Bill is almost as bad as the House Bill. And somebody tell Ross1776 to stop adding comments after drinking a fifth of Bacardi.

I'm sorry, what credentials or knowledge does Michelle Obama bring to the table that should make me believe a word that comes out of her mouth? She is nothing more than the Presiden't wife and obviously advocating his policies, she has nothing to offer me or others than her sympathy. Anyone see her speech on health care? She repeated the same word about 5,000 times! Sorry Obama you need a more reliable source to adovcate a ridiculous health care plan that no one supports!

The White House should count on Michele Obama to help push the health care reform in America.I think she is the right person for the job and she could make a big deference in getting the bill pasted. The speech she gave on Friday in Washington I think was the right thing to do. The goal was to win over women and activists. i am not sure she could reach that goal. The reason I say that is the President is having a hard time doing that him self and he is a much better speaker then she are. Let's just wait and see what comes out of her speech in the future.

Lecia, you're blowing the woman thing out of proportion. Women relate to women like men relate to men. It doesn't mean you have to agree or do what they say or suggest. Michelle is speaking out on a cause that she believes in and wants to see what she feels would be good for America.

Why would Michelle Obama care about America? She was never even proud to be an American until her husband ran for President. Until she had a personal dog in the fight, she really couldn't be bothered...
