WASHINGTON, D.C. - The White House is counting on First Lady Michelle Obama to help push health care reform in America. She gave her first speech on Friday in Washington. The goal is to win over women's groups and activists and make people realize what it means for their families. She's a popular figure in America, and the White House is hoping she will make a difference in whether or not health care reform takes place.
The First Lady told the mostly female audience, "If we want to achieve true equality for women ...if we want to ensure that women have opportunities that they deserve...if we want women to be able to care for their families and pursue things that they could never imagine, then we have to reform this system."
The First Lady will speak at more health care events in the month of October in the Washington area. She is a much welcome addition as the President does everything in his power to get the bill passed this fall.
