The Iranian President Ahmadinejad has said his country does not require nuclear weapons, but insisted that Tehran will not abandon its pursuit of nuclear energy.

In an interview with US network NBC Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not explicitly rule out the possibility that Iran will acquire nuclear weapons.

He said that it was not a part of our programmes and plans. Mr Ahmadinejad said his country will not yield to pressure from the UN, the US and European states.

Asked repeatedly whether there were any conditions under which Iran will develop a nuclear weapon, Mr Ahmadinejad each time replied that Iran has no use for such arms.

Meanwhile, Iranian security forces are on alert ahead of an annual rally expected to draw opposition leaders.
