In 1976, the Phil Govt made the island of Calauit in Busuanga, Palawan as a game preserve and wildlife sanctuary. Named as Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary (CGPWS), the sanctuary was the country's response to the growing clamor to save the decreasing population of wild african animals.
The sanctuary started with 104 heads of 8 African animals that includes 15 giraffes, 15 zebras, 18 impalas, 11 gazelles, 11 elands, 12 bushbacks, 10 topis and 12 waterbucks.
As of 2005, there are about 480 exotic animals plus 1390 endemic species.
