Getting up in the middle of the night to grab a snack from the fridge could make you gain weight.
Snacking at the wrong time such as late night influences weight gain, researchers at Chicago’s Northwestern University determined. Researchers at the Weinberg College of Arts and Science’s Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology believe the body’s regulation of energy by circadian rhythms maybe play a role in the weight gain.
The good news is that this research could lead to new weight loss techniques based on the timing of meals, Fred Turek a professor of neurobiology and physiology at Weinberg College said. Researchers made the determination after feeding mice a high fat diet during their normal sleeping hours. Since no research was done on humans this may not be conclusive. The doctors were trying to determine how the body’s circadian clock or biological timing system affects eating habits.
Results of the study were published in the journal Obesity.
