ACORN. Are they Really for All?

So here I am, listening to CNN or MSNBC or one of those television pseudo-news stations and here comes the CEO of ACORN onto the television.

My first impression of the woman was that she was articulate, sensible, reasonable, intelligent, educated, and a valuable member of our country and the society at large.

THEN she said that ACORN was still going to continue to help the poor and disadvantaged colored people of the United States. What about the white people? What color is she talking about? Why does it have to be about color? There are many white workers in Michegan who need help right now. There are probably many Latin Americans who need some help right now. I am sure there are probably some other races in need of help.

What does color have to do with the desire to help? Her statement was probably mis-stated, however with all Freudian slips, it has some basis of truth to the words that came out of her mouth. Wolf Blitzer did not even bat an eye when she said "colored citizens". He just kept on his list of approved questions.

What a shame, that after 234 years as a country we are still looking at trifling junk like color to dicatate our actions, determine who we will help and what we will choose.

Sad, really.

You're right in that help should not be given based on race, but it should be given to anyone who needs it. With that being said, statistically speaking, "colored" people need help the most.
  • Reply By KatePerez KatePerez | 2 months ago
What statistics are you speaking of? Statistically there are more white people in the United States, and statistically speaking there are more Latino's in the United States than there are "colored" people.

Why do "colored" people need the most help? I do not know a single "colored" person who did not get their own education, get their own job, get their own butts up and do what needed to be done. What makes one person more capable than another? It's drive, desire, integrity, initiative. No race has the exclusivity of those characteristics.

If a particular person truly needs help then they deserve it, regardless of whether they are black, blue, orange, white, green, purple or bear antennae or a single big eye in the middle of their face. If a particular person is able bodied they need to go find a thing and do it. Doesn't matter what, it all needs to be done. Pick up trash, sweep the streets, sell your car and take public transportation.

BUT, don't go around saying a particular race needs more help than another race. How does that statistic even make sense?

Where did you get your information? I'd LOVE to see it.

yes what the inspector said. And to add to that, Latino Americans are part of the colored people she talked about.

Along with that, organizations focus their efforts. Some say they will help orphans, some say the poor, some say children, some say the disabled, some same the veterans, some say sports, the arts, education, the youths, the elderly, the Chicagoans, New Yorkers, Michiganers etc. etc. etc....

ACORN said poor people, particularly those that are minorities. There is nothing bad behind ACORN's effort of trying to help the racial minorities of the nation.

No, they did not say "particularly those that are minorities" The woman in charge, Bertha something, said poor and middle class colored people.

I have a color, I cannot even find a stinkin' scholarship for college because my color is light peach and I do not carry an other than European lineage.

Orphans, sure. Poor, yeah, Children, disabled, vet's YES!!! But are we really that pathetic that we are still creating a new delimiter of color? Color is not a choice, nor is it a disability. It is not a condition, it's nothing more than pigmentation.

With that said, color should not ever be an issue.

When there are organizations that accept everyone, Miss America, Fireman's Organizations, Emmy's, Oscars, and the like, why then do we also have to add a separate organization, Miss Black America, African American Fireman's Org, Black Academy Awards? Why? Is it necessary for those of "color" to segregate themselves out when the country fought hard and long to integrate them as equals?

Are they superior because they pull themselves out of the frey, or are they choosing to express their differences which we should not even be thinking about.

If everyone would leave color out of everything then it would **HOPEFULLY** fade away. Out of sight, out of mind?

I don't know, but if no one tries it then we'll never know.

"Orphans, sure. Poor, yeah, Children, disabled, vet's YES!!! But are we really that pathetic that we are still creating a new delimiter of color? Color is not a choice, nor is it a disability. It is not a condition, it's nothing more than pigmentation."

Being born "colored" is not a choice, you are correct. It is nothing more than a pigment, you are correct. neither is it a condition, you are correct.

Just like being an orphan is not a choice, nor a condition.

But like orphans, people of color in the country are at a disadvantage and choosing to have your cause be to help the people of color is a as noble as helping the orphans population, the mentally ill or anyone else that may need help.

ACORN is specializing in a specific demographic of the American population.

There is nothing wrong with it.

That is all I was trying to say.

There is nothing wrong with the helping the Christians, there is nothing wrong with helping poor Christians, there is nothing wrong with helping poor Christians in urban communities, there is nothing wrong with helping poor Christian minorities in the urban communtiy. There is nothing wrong with helping poor minorities in urban America.

It sounded, to me that any one trying to help a certain race of people is not a good thing. I can see where you are coming from, but in a society like ours, the one where people think many brown skinned people are illegal, the black skinned people are lazy or gang bangers, where a brown person with a turban on is an Islamic terrorist, where a black skinned person gets longer prison sentences than the white skinned person, In a society like this, helping people of color is okay.

There is nothing wrong with having that be your organization's mission.

And for for this statement you wrote,"If everyone would leave color out of everything then it would **HOPEFULLY** fade away. Out of sight, out of mind?"

We are talking about the color of people's skin...there is no out of sight, out of mind. You will always be able to see a person's skin, and judgements will be based on this very physical trait.

The Helping of minorities is because of the reaction to segregation, it is not causing segregation.

Kate, you may not be racist, doesn't your neighbor isn't.

People may not be wearing sheets, but they may still believe that the black man walking down the street might be trying to rob them. Or the Mexican in that hospital waiting room is illegal, or the Chinese man at the dry cleaner is a communist, or the Korean at the library supports the north korean leader.

Or the person in HR that thinks that black people just aren't the kind of people that properly represent the goals and achievements of their company.

People of color in America need help, organizations like ACORN provide it.

She really said colored? She is a moron. The only colored person that I have seen was Al Jolson, who was a minstrel idiot.
  • Reply By KatePerez KatePerez | 2 months ago
Yes, she said "colored" I saw her on 2 channels, on 2 interviews and she said "colored" both times.

Black is not a disadvantage. It's a lovely color that I sure wish I could have. A natural tan would be wonderful!

Otherwise, why is it that colored people are disadvantaged? I was told I could not be Compaq certified because women just can't understand that. Well, I am. I was told that women should not consider the military, it's just too hard. I made it in the Marines. I was told that I was not a very good singer, so I made it into All State Choir my senior year of High School. I sure did not grow up entitled. My mom wanted me to be nothing more than a mother and housewife, she paid much more attention to the growth of my brothers, yet I am a degreed IT Consultat AND a degreed Criminal Justice Forensics Psychologist. I have never let someone keep me down, and there is NOTHING keeping anyone else down except their own lack of personal expectations.

When are people going to stop whining about what they don't have and work their own butts off to get what they want? Poor people are poor because they did not visit the right organization, did not try. I had to try, the things I listed above did not just fall into my lap. If I don't have the ability to have things given to me, why should anyone else expect it?

I am so ready to help out those who are willing to help themselves. I am so NOT ready to help someone based on the color of their skin and the "poor unfortunate" life they may have lived. I lived the same poor unfortunate existance, was raped at 14, was molested most of my teen and tween years, and was shoved in corners because I was not a boy. Yeah, the world is full of poor unfortunates. You persevere.

What ever happened to "God helps those who help themselves"?
  • Reply By InspectorGadget InspectorGadget | 2 months ago
First of all, I clearly said that help "should be given to ANYONE who needs it." Second of all, I was referring to minorities when I said "colored". Third of all, there might be "more white people in the United States", but unless I am mistaken, the percentage of minorities who are in poverty well exceeds the percentage of White people who are in poverty. I'm just pointing this out as a possible reason for the comments made by Acorn. Fourth of all, don't fall for that painted picture. It's unlikely that everyone has 100% equal opportunity. There's still a lot of racial oppression out there.

Not sure why you are counting.

Everyone has opportunity. EVERYONE. It is up to you to pick yourself up and get it.
