South Carolina, home turf of the country's currently most prominent bigamist, Gov. Mark Sanford, and of the only U.S. Congressman ever to breach House decorum during a speech by the president of the United States, could be the scene of another national embarrassment Sept. 26 when a candidate for state adjutant general gives away a Russian-made machine gun during a fund-raising rally of Second Admendment enthusiasts.
"This event is about celebrating our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms," Republican candidate Dean Allen said of the rally planned in Greenville, SC. "We are celebrating these rights in the hopes the liberals in this country never get the chance to take our Second Amendment rights from us."
Allen in a prepared statement did not comment on why he would be giving away a Russian machine gun at the rally, which is expected to be attended by American gun lovers. He also did not note whether the gun would be limited to single shot versus automatic fire.
Souith Carolina politics have been roiled recently because the state's govermor has been fighting to retain his position despite having admitted to an out-of-wedlock affair with a woman from Argentina.
More recently, South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson ignited a political firestorm by yelling "You lie!" during a speech by Pres. Barack Obama before a joint meeting of Congress. The House reprimanded Wilson for the outburst andf violation of House decorum, but an unrepentant Wilson has branded the vote along party lines a "politica stunt.
