Are we being deceived about our Constitutional freedoms in this country? In a recent local newscast in Northern California, Sacramento man John Mercati wants to make a marriage protection bill that proposes divorce illegal; stating his basis that the King James version of the Bible condones divorce as a sin. He has already issued this bill to the State Attorney General for review.
Is this intrusion into a private situation that two consenting adults are going through? In my informed opinion, yes. Although Poposition 8 had passed in California last year, much to my dismay and disappointment that it is Constitutionally unsound, to ban same-sex couples to marry, Mr. Mercati wants to further infiltrate and disrupt our individual choice to force two people to stay married when they fall out of love? This is unacceptable. The privacy issues alone would create such disorganized chaos in the court system that is already broken and beaten by those who continually seek to eviscerate what tenuous ties we have to our own individual rights.
We should seek a unanimity to tell people like Mr. Mercati to leave our choices alone. You believe what you want to believe but keep your religious views out of legislative edict and control. Divorce is here for a reason - and a valid legal means of severing ties with someone we cannot seem to relate to any longer due to circumstances beyond our control. What's next if this becomes law? Legislating who to love (although Prop 8 confirms this in one way!)? Legislating who we can have children with?
