In September of 1964 four young lads from across the pond invaded the United States taking the nation by storm with their long haired mop top look and rock music. Young girls were stirred into a frenzy at the sight of these four Englishmen. They were known simply as John, Paul, George, and Ringo; collectively they were called The Beatles.
By the time the band split up in 1970 The Beatles had sold millions of albums. According to the RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America -, the folks who award American record sales, every album released by The Beatles has sold at least two million copies with many selling much more. the RIAA also awards albums that sell more than 10 million copies with a diamond award. The Beatles have seven such awards with:
"Abby Road" - 12 million
"St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - 11 million
"Beatles 62-66" - 15 million
"Beatles 67-70" - 16 million
"Beatles" (debut release) - 19 million
DVD Anthology - 13 million
"1" - 10 million
(These numbers do not include any sales for the new releases which will not be released until later this week)
On September 9 a new video game featuring the music of The Beatles and re-issues of all 13 Beatles albums were released. Neilson Soundscan (they chart the sales) estimates that 235,000 Beatles albums had been sold in just the first two days of release. "Experts" in the know say that sales for the re-issued Beatles albums could top 500,000 by the end of the first weeks sales. If current estimates hold up The Beatles could easily hold nine of the top 10 spots on the Billboard album chart.
