Bio-food.
It has the same smooth, sophisticated sound as biology, bio-diesel, and biosphere. However, this term doesn't have anything to do with these concepts. The reality is that bio-food is simply a fancy label put on processed foods that have been genetically altered.
Although we are all getting better about looking for labels that say "Organic," "Free-range," "Vegetarian-fed" and "Pesticide-free" (you ARE looking for those labels aren't you?), it's often what the label's NOT telling us that is most important.
Although a recent poll conducted by the PEW Charitable Trust found that over 75 percent of Americans want to know up front whether or not the foods they buy contain genetically engineered ingredients, the United States government has refused to require manufacturers to disclose this important fact on their labels.
This refusal to be honest with the American people is a glaring error, especially considering that Britain, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and most of Europe has already adopted similar labeling standards.
