Not the Jesus I grew up following.
Whose Jesus?

"Jesus Christ was a man who traveled through the land, a hard working man and brave. He said to the rich, 'Give your goods to the poor,' but they laid Jesus Christ in His grave."
-- WOODY GUTHRIE

No matter what the right-wing pastors who preach the prosperity gospel tell you, Jesus Christ was not a fan of the rich.

Nor when he said we will always have the poor with us did he mean we didn't need to do anything about it.

In fact, something like 30 percent of the words credited to Jesus in the New Testament deal with how we should help the poor. When a rich man asked Christ how to follow him, he told the man to sell all his goods and give them to the poor. Then he could follow him.

But in the last 30 years or so in this country, ever since the national emergence of the Christian Right, one segment of that Right has been preaching something called the "prosperity gospel."

The prosperity gospel basically says that God provides material wealth for those he favors spiritually. "God wants you to be rich." That's the battle cry of prosperity theology. "Give to God and God will repay you tenfold."

It's funny that Christ didn't say much about that. The prosperity people have misinterpreted the "talents" story and stretched it to favor wealth, but I can't get past that old thing about it being easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Part of this has been a way to get the moral wing of the GOP to support the money wing's constant drive for lower taxes for the rich. If you believe that rich folks are God's favorite children, it makes a lot of sense.

Yes, Christ was talking about more than just handouts. He did tell the story about teaching a man to fish and feeding him for a lifetime, but he certainly didn't say not to feed the man if the fish weren't biting.

In fact, he didn't say much about rich folks feeling good about themselves. His greatest message was that there were two great commandments -- love God with all your heart, sould and mind and love your neighbor as yourself.

It wasn't a popular message.

Remember, they killed Him.

I always liked Jackson Browne's song, "The Rebel Jesus."

"... and once a year when Christmas comes, we give to our relations, and perhaps we give a little to the poor if the generosity should seize us. But if any one of us should interfere in the business of why there are poor, they get the same as the rebel Jesus."

I have been a Christian all my life, and I know we do not make laws according to Christian precepts. But I do know that the Law of Reciprocity exists in all religions -- including Secular Humanism -- except Satanism.

"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

So whether it's health care, jobs or just a helping hand up, we really ought to figure out a way to stop helping the rich and powerful and start doing what we can for the least among us.

Remember that Jesus said that too.

"Such as you do to the least among you, you do to Me."

That's a really well written article mike. I just saw this video and it made me sad:it was about these tea baggers in DC protesting Obamacare, and one wonders that Obama is trying to create reform to help the poor (ostensibly)but these people are so brainwashed by the right wing media they insist on watching that they don't realise it and will oppose it tooth and nail, because he's part black, or part muslim, or part democrat w/e. And these people are the poor. I live in a place where poverty is astonishing, but it's not something anyone should ever grow to accept; we deal with it yes, but it is unacceptable.

get off it changez, the dc protesting had nothing to do with people being against the poor or obama being black, muslim or demorcat and mike i have never heard ANYONE preaching that god favors the rich....care to share a link to such talk?

Google Joel Osteen or prosperity gospel.
  • Reply By lecia lecia | 2 months ago
you mean cause osteen says that "God wants us to prosper financially, to have plenty of money, to fulfill the destiny He has laid out for us."

so do you think god wants us to live in proverty and have to struggle constantly to survive?

i am agnostic but i think i would pick his god before i would yours....lol

Jesus Himself was not against people having money, He was against greed. Jesus was very rich upon this earth. As we all know, the first gift mentioned in the famous Christmas story that the Wise Men gave to Jesus was gold. He was just against greed. For example, in Africa, many children die of malnourishment because dictators prevent humanitarians to send food to villagers throughout the continent. For example, in N. Korea, Kim Jong-Il forces poverty and famine upon the entire nation based solely upon greed.

Yes this is a good commentary and I would like to add. Living abundantly does not mean money by itself. To live as God intended us to live is not what " they " preach in churches all across america today. If you twist it just right You can find an excuse for anything in the bible but you have to twist it just right. I went to seminary and when we got to the lessons on interpretation it was all about how to preach to people that they are living under grace and when you fall from grace just ask to be forgiven and pick yourself up and go on. So the church turns out to be just a building that the majority go to once a week and ain't got a speck of religion in their heart where it is supposed to be.

I've watched (mainly out of curiosity) a number of evangelists on TV when they are asking for money, holding "praise-ethons," and explaining to viewers how God will bless them many-fold if they would give whatever they can to keep that particular ministry going. I've often wondered why these preachers just don't go directly to God for their needs and cut out the middle man?

One of the really sad things is how the rich Republicans have been able to co-opt the apparently very naive right wing religious and get them to do not only their bidding, but all the while actively doing exactly the oppostite of what Jesus taught. Given their propensity for "self interpretation" it's no wonder. They find what they seek, which is validation for their own greed and selfishness.

Also I now see a need to set something straight the truth is that Obama has not and has no intention of doing an iota of a bit for the poor people. He has given money to people so that they can maintain an exorbitant lifestyle. He has yet to do something for the poor people. The people who voted for him were fooled by the same old change campaigne that has been used in the past and lo and behold " the more things change the more they remain the same " So since someone said otherwise I had to set the truth before you. The truth is not a democracy and does not change for anyone. Supply and demand is nothing but hogwash fear and greed are the influence on the economy and the market and prices and wages and so on so on so forth. Sorry to seem like I am getting away from the intended subject here but it is relevant if you read the comments above this one. Check my post in politics if you think I am wrong then I have to say liberals are big persons who wear adult sized clothing and have a desperate need to grow up. You can't please everyone no matter what you do and that is the aim of the liberal they want to please everyone. Obama is just another greedy politician he does not have religion in his heart where it should be.

I don't claim to know what God wants, except that various religions, cultures and values just say 'be a good person' and good things will happen to you. I don;t think money is that important; when you have love in your life and people who love you and vice versa, that is more important.

A truly good man needs no money because by his ways and actions the world will provide for him !Jesus was just a man, a wise man with good ideas to try and turn around a time of greed and self righteousness. He died a martyr to show those around him the sins of those who had power and used that power against those that would disagree. Therefore showing all the hypocrisy of their right. Would Jesus be calling out all these Preachers, Evangalists and Republicans who live grab all the fist fulls of money they can get their hands on? I think so.You don't need to be rich to be happy, you don't need millions to give your kids what culture expects they "need". All humans need to thrive is food, warmth and love ! Everything else is extra. If these parents and preachers spent less time filling their pockets they would have more time to love their family and friends. That is what makes a man truly Rich.Love of those whom they care for.Money can't buy that, no matter what the television tells you !

Arsine you got it half right Lecia you added the other half and now its right. Fear and greed is what is running this country. Why would a man who has plenty of money ask for a headache (political office president being migraine) I know I wonder how many liberals realize.

Seek ye first the Kingdom, brothers and sisters...and the rest will be provided. Can I get an AMEN? I said Can I get an AMEN!?!?

On a less dramatic note, I recently read Sinclair Lewis' "Elmer Gantry" for the first time, and even though it was written some 80 years ago, it remains relevant today. It's a tale about a preacher, but it's a lot more than that, too.

Unbelieveable spins again. Making even religion and God now into a partisan issue with respect to what is now going on here.

Did you know that the top two richest men in this country, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett supported Obama and Hillary, respectively. And that they stand to gain most financially from this health care "deform" and that both are avowed atheists?

Unbelieve spin again, Mike, and using Christ in order to do it. The Catholic Church is no slacker when it comes to monetary gains, and amassing art and one of the wealthiest institutions in the world.

And give back much, but also on a portion as they determine, as Jesus also preached in giving with a cheerful spirit and heart from that which is not needed for your own survival. His words are twisted by the liberals again for their agendas, and especially the Catholics who count most of those illegals their members, and then who are donating some of their tithes through stolen goods and drug profits, in many cases.

    And that is the truth.

Other than saying help the poor instead of doing so much for the rich, there was nothing political in that article.

And the Pope does have a fortress wall separating his "country" from his own church members, after all.

So the Catholic Church and beliefs at times are quite contradictory, wouldn't you say? As at least a few American Catholics can admit readily.

And this bill with its increases in taxation has nothing to do with caring about the poor. Since the most expensive homes in New Orleans now are being listed by that London based high price real estate firm, Sotheby's, while the poor in New Orleans are still fighting with both insurers and the government, and the state is now seizing the poor's lands if they don't make a declaration to rebuild.

So how's that for charity? And Louisiana is primarily Catholic, at that.
  • Posted By Ross1776 Ross1776 | 2 months ago
But I do agree, that entire "prosperity" stuff, and Rick Warren (who sits on the Council for Foreign Relations) is also tainted scripture, and Mr. Warren may be generous with his book sale proceeds almost to a fault, but little of that goes to helping the poor actually in this country at all.

He is another who focuses more on foreign lands and shores, than his own backyard.

The gospel is taken far out of context and should be read and believed what it means literally, not what some rich person may interpret it to be. Main reason why I left the church of God because the pastor always wants too much and is always after riches. 16/9/2009.
  • Posted By gyrog52 gyrog52 | 2 months ago
Yes even the church is run by greed I left the church because of two reasons. The first being that they started taking collection and then go upstairs and count it if not enuff they passed the trays around agin imagine that! The second too many hypocrites that loved to spread gossip about other members and then they wanted to cry when something was being spread about them. Its hard to feel sorry for someone who is getting a taste of their own medicine. Like I done said before going to the building on sunday is not having religion. Religion must be maintained inside the heart 24/7 365. Yes prosperity and abundant living that Jesus preached was much deeper than money. Love and that means giving and receiving love is the root of abundant living. Misquotes are all too common money is not the root of all evil. The correct quote from the bible is " The love of money is the root of all evil " so I am going to try to refrain after this one. I have enjoyed this discussion even reading the " stuff " that is not quite right some of that was funny so I got a little entertainment also.
