The Honduran situation has more or less disappeared from the mainstream press especially the continuing protests. Obama still claims that the San Jose accords should be the basis for a negotiated settlement but he has not been able to do anything to bring the coup leaders on board even though the economy of Honduras is suffering and parts of the military and the business community would like to see a negotiated solution along the lines of the San Jose Accords. As this article shows since the coup it is already half way to election time. The coup leaders think that they can wait until the election and then the new president will be accepted. Most countries will not accept this. As usual the Obama administration waffles saying it might not recognise the result.
If the Obama administration froze the bank accounts of coup officials in the U.S. this certainly might help change minds. However, the Obama administration has still not even decided that the coup is a military coup and so has not cut off all aid that would be ended under such a declaration."
Here are a couple of exercpts from a blog article:
Micheletti (the coup installed president) complained that the letter (revoking his visa) addressed him "not as the president of Honduras" but as speaker of Congress, his position before elected head of state Mel Zelaya was dragged from the presidential palace on June 28 and flown to Costa Rica.
.......An important question is whether these and other measures will hold after the November presidential election. Talking to the press, Micheletti repeated for the Nth time that he would not accept the San José Accord, and therefore there is no more negotiation. Thus, for the Nth time he demonstrates his belief that Honduras can make it to November, at which point the pressure will subside.
And if my counting is correct, then the Honduran crisis is at the halfway point between the coup and the election.
Days since the coup: 77
Days until the scheduled presidential election: 77 ""
