Is America becoming a lot less united?

America seems to be approaching a breaking point between left and right.
Two Americas?

Is it possible Pat Buchanan could be right?

In his syndicated column today, the conservative pundit speculated on the possibility that America might just be coming apart.

"We seem not only to disagree with each other more than ever, but to have come almost to detest one another. Politically, culturally, racially, we seem ever ready to go for each others' throats."

Visit any wingnut Website, left or right, and you'll see it. Free Republic may be the most vicious of the big ones, but Daily Kos isn't far behind.

When George W. Bush was re-elected in 2004, there were numerous maps like the one pictured here, suggesting that the blue states could align with Canada and form one country while leaving the red states to stew in their juices.

We're certainly not the unified nation we were 50 years ago.

Buchanan continues:

"In what sense are we one nation and one people anymore? For what is a nation if not a people of a common ancestry, faith, culture and language, who worship the same God, revere the same heroes, cherish the same history, celebrate the same holidays, and share the same music, poetry, art and literature?"

I know one thing. A division along the lines in the map would strongly favor the USC, which would have most of the states that pay more in taxes than they receive in services. It would gain all of Canada's natural resources and would have most of the country's cultural centers other than Nashville, Tenn., and Branson, Mo.

A blue nation certainly would institute reasonable gun control laws and a more progressive income tax system. Some might think food would be a problem -- most of the farm states would be red -- but the biggest farm state of all is California, and the Canadian provinces in the West produce a lot of food too.

In all seriousness, I don't think it's going to happen. That Russian guy might have predicted a U.S. split into numerous nations, but I think there is still more that holds us together than that keeps us apart.

But think of it.

All those right-wing talk show hosts would become foreigners, as would Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney and most of the rest of the right wing. Some of them have even talked about seceding, in Texas and in Alaska.

They could have their country -- which I assume they wouldn't call "Jesusland" -- just the way they wanted, although the United States name belongs to us.

It probably doesn't matter.

There's a good one sitting out there that they've used before. It starts with a "C."

What is it?   That Sarah is a pretty face?   That she has a nice ass?   Looks good in red? Speaks the right words?   What? Sarah is a sound bite, not a leader, and she is raking in the bucks off your backs, when the money needs to go to real...

We could have another Civil War, especially if Obama wins in 2012.
