Geo TV reported here today that in a densely populated area of Karachi a trader,Iftikhar Chaudry was distriuting free ration which included wheat flour.This was the normal practice every Ramdan.People receiving the food items were mostly women and children.Hundreds of women had come from all over the city to get the much in demand commodity.

Suddenly the crowd got out of control and there was a big stampede up the stairs into this old house in the Jodia Bazaar area of old Karachi.

Due to the turmoil the chaos several women and children were suffocated and trampled to death.Many injured were admitted in hospital.

It is believed that the police was not informed before hand about the ration distribution and there was no proper arrangement nor supervision of the flour that was being given to poor people in that area.

The authorities have ordered the arrest of the traderand the Sindh government has ordered a compensation of Rs.100,000 for the families that lost their loved ones.

President Zardari and and Prime minister Gillani have ordered a through investigation into the incident and have given intructions that those injured be well looked after and should be given the best treatment possible.
