US Open Fines Serena $10K for Tirade

Serena Williams' racket-smashing, verbal tirade at the US Open last night will apparently cost her $10,500, the New York Times reports. The United States Tennis Association levied the fine today for unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse, but will let her play her doubles match with Venus tomorrow. Venus practiced with her father today, but Serena was nowhere to be seen. “I would be utterly shocked if they don’t" play, says a retired player who works for CBS. “The best antidote for something like this is to get right back on the court.”

That's quite a hefty fine. It's unfortunate that she lost her temper, but hopefully she will learn from this experience. When the intensity is so high in a match that is so important, it's easy to get frustrated and let your emotions get the best of you. It was a bad call by the official, so you can't blame her for getting upset, but she should have handled the situation differently.

This fine is rubbing salt in the wound of Serena Williams. What a joke, I hope she boycotts the next US Open cuz that would screw over that Major for years to come.
