I have found a better use for old computers. No need to buy a Netbook. You can still have one more uses for your old 10 year old laptop. Use it to just cruise the web. To save you money, here are instructions on how to do it.
If you have an old pc with between 96 MB to 128 MB of RAM on it , at least
3 GB on a hard drive, between 166MHz and 400MHz for processor speed, USB
1.0 port and an Ethernet card, you can gain access to a LAN 10/100 line.
The operating systems that work with this configuration would start with
Windows 98 to Windows Home XP.
If you want to start from scratch or give a student a present, old pcs with
this type of configuration can start at $50.00 to $100.00 on Ebay with
sellers that have between 98% to 100% satisfaction ratings. These ratings
together with the PC description are usually good signs to a good purchase
from EBAY.
The only software to add to your system would be an anti-virus software
package. Through Grifsoft’s AVG antivirus program, you can download a free
anti-virus software that protects your system while still keeping the price
of the computer to $100.00 or below the price, if purchased from EBAY, or
free if you had it lying around.
Once you connect through your Internet service provider, you can setup your
computer to be a smart terminal and do all of your work from sites such as
Google Docs for word-processing, spreadsheet calculations, POP3 e-mail ,
and appointments. Your work can be saved online. You can always back up
with a flash drive or portable hard drive through the USB port. You can go
one step further and if your office uses a VPN connection, this
configuration has no problem connecting to your office’s network remotely.
So if you have this type of PC in your office or home, don’t throw it out
and count it as a loss to the company, bring it back to life through online
apps and the Internet connection. Note that this will only work if you can still find the battery for your computer (the CMOS battery and regular backup battery). It also will only work if your computer still has working parts: hard drive, keyboard, LCD screen, USB port, video port, and cd-rom drive. Also find out if there were any warnings about your pc model was found to have overheating problems in the past years.
