A line judge talks to the umpire during the match between Serena ...

Serena Williams lost to Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 in the semi final of the US Open 2009. Serena is the title holder and favorite to win again, but Kim won unexpectedly. From available reports, it seems she was annoyed at the lineswoman and vent her anger. She used abusive language and even threatened the judge with dire consequences. It was most unsportsmanlike action and she was penalized for her behavior. Serena was on her nerves because her match was postponed a number of times due to rains and her opponent Kim Clijsters was playing a better game – her frustration showed when the lineswoman called her for a foot fault .That precipitated matters.

I think she got upset because the fault was called during an important moment in the match and it cost her the match and the tournament. It was really close at that point, and I think she was in a bad mood anyways.

It's unfortunate that Serena let her emotions get the best of her. You can't blame her for being upset about a wrong call, especially during a match like that where the intensity is so high, but if she had kept her cool, she still had a chance to win. It's always sad to see a match decided by something like that, but the rules are the rules. Congrats to Clijsters.
