It was too good to last forever – the brief moment of glory for the Indians vanished in the gloom of a terrible defeat in the Compaq ODI tri-series match. They suffered a 130 odd runs loss to the Sri Lankans and they have only themselves to blame. To begin with, the 1st over yielding 11 runs set the stage for a nightmarish experience. The Sri Lankans took advantage of the poor fielding and, by the time they finished, there was a huge total of 300 plus staring at the Indians. Mahendra Singh Dhoni must have had full faith in his batting maestros in the form of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid – but they let him and India down once again. They just could not handle the impeccable bowling of Angelo Mathews of the home team. It was misery for both the stalwarts of Indian cricket and raises the question yet again as to whether they should retire honorably and hand over the reins to youngsters.
