delta smelt

Wildlife Guardiens filed two petitions in one month for 681 species to be added to the endangered species list. This move took the Fish and Wildlife Service by suprise and is really making them hurry since the Endangered Species Act requires them to find and publish findings on each species within ninety days, to the extent possible.

The delta smelt was declared protected in 1993 in California. Millions of gallons of water have been diverted to fisheries for it at the expense of thousands of farming jobs. All of this and the smelt hasn't shown a population increase according to some observers since predators continue to happily feed on the smelt.

One species ground a huge industry to a halt. How many jobs will almost seven hundred cost?
