Private air charter service NetJets Inc. says it will lay off 5 percent of its employees in an effort to save expenses.

The company did not specify Friday how many workers would lose jobs. Chairman and Chief Executive David Sokol says other cost-cutting actions also are being taken.

Spokesman Ted Lowen says the company also will hold off on plans for a $200 million expansion that would add 800 jobs at Port Columbus International Airport.

NetJets had announced last month that it would move its corporate headquarters from Woodbridge, N.J., to Columbus, the base of its flight operations.

NetJets allows individuals and firms to share ownership of business jets. It is a unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

That is unfortunate. In this economy, the demand for jets must be quite low. Hopefully the laid off workers and their families will somehow be able to recover from this and find a way to make ends meet.
