There is added color to the upcoming Philippine national elections in May 2010. Former President Joseph Estrada is running for the presidency. He does not mind that Sen. Aquino decided to run and be among his opponents. His presidency was cut short when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo succeeded him through people power. He was jailed for alleged corruption and plunder charges. However, he was set free.
His son is Sen. Jinggoy Estrada. His bosom friend, Fernando Poe, Jr. ran for the national presidency shortly before his death. Estrada was a former matinee idol and box-office king of the Philippine film industry. He served as San Juan City Mayor. However, he dropped out of school. His followers are the poor segment of the population who account for the majority of the people.
Interestingly, after being jailed for several years and set free, his public charm and appeal have remained steadfast. He receives thunderous applause from his audience whenever he speaks. He relates to his followers through the native language since they do not understand nor speak English well.
