Less Salt Intake is Better for the Heart

If Americans were to cut their salt intake to the recommended daily levels of no more than 2,300 milligrams per day, it would save billions of dollars in health care cost and trips to the hospital.

High sodium intake contributes to high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, and other related illnesses. The average American currently consumes around 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day, according to a study done by authors for the American Journal of Health Promotion.

In a new study done by RAND, a non profit organization, researchers estimated there would be eleven million fewer cases of high blood pressure each year. Cutting down sodium consumption could save any where from $18-26 billion yearly.

A lot of the sodium Americans consumes comes from packaged foods and meals in restaurants. With this knowledge, it makes sense to start cutting sodium from processed foods and when eating out. Try not to be so quick to grab the salt shaker.

If you want to lower the possible health issues mentioned, start reading and paying close attention to food labels in the grocery store. Even so called healthy foods, which may be low in sugar, fat, and calories, can still be high in sodium.

Another safe measure is to stay away from fast food restaurants. They are the source for all kinds of health problems in America.

You know what? This is SO TRUE!! Over the past 3 years or so, I have started to cut down my sugar and fat intake and you know what? I FEEL BETTER. I like taking care of my body and watching out for additives and stuff like salt, saturated fats and the like.

I started really paying attention to these frozen pre-made meals that Stouffers and Michealena's and even (gulp!) Lean Couisine makes--and you know what? They may all say "low fat" this and low-fat that but hardly ANY of them say "Low sodium". Now, I may see "lower sodium" on things like soup- Campbell's, is a good example and other canned items. But very rarely do I see it labled on processed frozen food items.

It's all good to be fat free but SODIUM is just as bad for your health. My family and I love to go to Marie Callender's restaurant every once in awhile but ohhh man--gotta watch that sodium!! Especially the soups. The pies there have a LOT of fat in the crust part, so watch that too.

A lot of things we love are HIGH in BAD STUFF. Think about it. We have to be more CAREFUL what and HOW MUCH we eat. They say "What you don't know won't hurt you" but that's A LIE!!!! It WILL hurt you.

I CHOOSE to live a healthier lifestyle and to lead by example for my relatives, especially for my future children's sakes.
