If Americans were to cut their salt intake to the recommended daily levels of no more than 2,300 milligrams per day, it would save billions of dollars in health care cost and trips to the hospital.
High sodium intake contributes to high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, and other related illnesses. The average American currently consumes around 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day, according to a study done by authors for the American Journal of Health Promotion.
In a new study done by RAND, a non profit organization, researchers estimated there would be eleven million fewer cases of high blood pressure each year. Cutting down sodium consumption could save any where from $18-26 billion yearly.
A lot of the sodium Americans consumes comes from packaged foods and meals in restaurants. With this knowledge, it makes sense to start cutting sodium from processed foods and when eating out. Try not to be so quick to grab the salt shaker.
If you want to lower the possible health issues mentioned, start reading and paying close attention to food labels in the grocery store. Even so called healthy foods, which may be low in sugar, fat, and calories, can still be high in sodium.
Another safe measure is to stay away from fast food restaurants. They are the source for all kinds of health problems in America.
