Its over two months the Academic Staff Union of Universities went on strike. Students are idling away hoping the Government and the lecturers resolve their differences so that they can resume classes.
If the children of Nigeria’s Government officials are schooling in our public universities would they have allowed this strike to continue this long?
In a bid to stop the frequent down tools in the sector, Proffessor Pat Utomi had called for the enactment of laws that would make it mandatory for Children of Nigerian elected officials to have their education in Nigerian schools after what he called a “2 year period of sustained investment in the sector”.
It is sad that that those in authorities have continued to serve themselves instead of the nation. Or what can one say, when the current strike appears not to bother the Governemnt after over eight weeks of industrial action to press home demands for improved funding and conditions in our universites.
A radio presenter in his morning show called for the sack of the Education Minister. A valid call indeed, since the crisis right within his constituency has denied solution.
Early in July, the Minister, Sam Egwu reportedly spent 120 million naira to celebrate his 25 years of marriage with his wife in an elobarate ceremony attended by his colleagues in Government attended. We saw it on national TV.
Interestingly the EFCC, the anti-corruption agency is yet to invite the public servent to verify the said amount and its source .
The agency had pre-occupied itself in a media frenzy, quizzing bank CEOs less than a week their sack was announced by the the Central Bank Governor for bad loans.
