Muntazer al-Zaidi will be released on 14th September

Unguided missiles in the form of shoes hogged the headlines some time back in December 2008 during the last visit of US President George W Bush to Iraq. The hero of the moment, Iraqi journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi, was arrested and will now be released on 14th September 2009. While hurling the shoe, he feared the worst – being shot dead by the bodyguards of the US President. Muntazer had vented his anger at the American administration by hurling a shoe at the US President George Bush in a public meeting. He uttered some 20 odd words that have been immortalized – the incident has made a deep impression in the minds of the Iraqis and has been marketed in the form of T-shirts with appropriate slogans and even children’s games. Muntazer has now been flooded with offers of jobs and various other gifts.

I remember when that happened, I was surprised he was able to get the second shoe off after hurling the first one, the Secret Service was a little slow there.
