Almost as quickly as another document surfaced Tuesday purporting to “certify” that President Obama was born in Kenya, it was deemed to have problems by none other than MSNBC’s Keith OlbermannKeith Olbermann. Not that Olbermann has the final word on such matters, but he pointed out inconsistencies with the date-month-year sequencing of numbers that would seem to confirm that this latest attempt at taking away the president’s natural-born citizenship was a fraudulent one. Again.
But a more relevant question looms, unrelated though it may seem at first glance: If Hawaii secedes, would Obama still be president? What is the constitutional provision for this potential eventuality? Is there one? Would the courts have to consult the Federalist Papers, or perhaps the old law school writings of Robert Bork? One shudders to think of the implications.
Not that Hawaii is getting all Texas about secession or anything, but as this recent article makes clear, there is a base of support for Hawaiian independence. Would Obama be allowed to remain as the U.S. chief executive, or would he be exiled to Honolulu forever? Would college bowl games still be played in Hawaii, or would they be moved to Baja California once President Biden throws his support behind the idea of a North American Union, with the "Amero" replacing the dollar as currency?
Let’s hope it never comes to that. Let’s hope Hawaii remains as American as its native son president, at least until Kenya joins the Union. At that point, all bets are off - unless we're betting with gold.
