By now the President's speech to kids has been so hyped that it is bound to disappoint just like most Super Bowls. In fact the situation is worse than most Super Bowl as the White House has already been forced to release a transcript of the address ahead of time in reaction to conservative paranoia. So imagine watching the Super Bowl knowing not only the final score but also how every play that would be run.
Despite what is universally regarded as a non-partisan, uplifting message a number of school districts are still refusing to show the video altogether. Just like the town halls the conservative reaction has now caused an opposite liberal reaction of groups who are protesting in support of the video.
In the end after today the story will die and become just another example of a huge controversy that should have never been big deal near less a controversy. Students will not come home brainwashed Obamabots nor will they come home inspired like never before by the address. Media networks would have better spent their time focusing on the health care debate, or Iran, or about a thousand other issues instead of the speech. Parents would have been better off worrying about the friends their child makes at school, or how they relate to their teacher, or any one of thousand other things dealing with school. Instead we all talked ceaselessly about a story which did not deserve more than five minutes of our time. Yet somehow I feel like eight years from now liberals will be up in arms when a conservative President does not receive the same criticism for giving the same type of address to students.
