Pirates set recored-breaking 17th consecutive losing season

The Pittsburgh Pirates (54-82) guranteed themselves their 17th consecutive losing season with a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs (69-67). The Pirates haven't had a winning season since 1992.

Ted Lilly and Derrek Lee paved the way for the Cubs in the 4-2 victory. Lee had 2 HRs and 3 RBIs while Lilly pitched 6 innings of 2 hit ball while allowing 2 earned runs.

It's sad to see this happen to an organization as great as the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Clemente-led Pirates of 1971 remains one of my all-time favorite "teams," with characters like Sanguillen, Stargell, Blass, Moose, Hebner, Ellis and the legendary Mazeroski all playing a prominent role in bringing that championship to Pittsburgh. The '79 Pirates featured a truly gifted hitter in Dave Parker, but it was the 39-year-old Stargell - "Pops" - who will always be remembered as the heart and soul of that "We Are Family" championship season.

This lifetime St. Louis Cardinals fan would love to see a more competitive Pittsburgh team in the N.L. Central.
