Stress is when you have something that you can’t handle, whether too much or just too difficult, and it eventually overwhelms you. You end up feeling tense and anxious, worried about failure or not getting everything done. It usually has to do with a need to go somewhere or do something that the person has experienced something negative in the past. Just thinking about reliving such an experience brings tension to the individual that sometimes this stressful situation can lead to making that person physically ill.
The first step towards recovery is noticing the symptoms, whether experiencing one of them or many of them at the same time. Such symptoms include tight muscles in your body, sudden rise in blood pressure, grinding of teeth, clenched jaws, clammy hands, perspiration, insomnia, agitation, irritability, depression, restlessness, and confusion. Some people might experience nightmares about their stressful situation. While other people's stress might lead them to take too much drugs in order to relieve their stress. Other symptoms might include stomach acid, fatigue, anxiety and nervousness.
After you realize that stress is negatively affecting you and your health, you need to take the needed steps toward effectively solving your problems before your stress as well as your health worsens. For starters, keep a journal in order to record your stressful problems. Make a list and identify your problems that are bothering you. Then, list possible ways or remedies in order to solve these problems or, at least, alleviate them by brainstorming actions. Then, go through the list you wrote and choose a possible and effective solution. As you try each solution, take notes on a daily basis. And, periodically check on your progress to see if your problem is solved. Evaluate which solution worked and which needs to be improved in order to further improve your situation. In some situations, you might be better off talking out your problems with someone that you trust, whether a good friend, family member, therapist, or shrink.
If you don't take immediate steps to solve your problems, they can worsen into other illnesses. Stress can cause high blood cholesterol, stomach acid, ulcers, colitis, high blood pressure, strokes, heart problems, migraines and asthma as well as acne and other skin conditions.
Therefore, learn different ways to relieve stress by relaxing on a daily basis. Self-hypnosis helps you solve your problems by visualization. Think about your stressful problem as well as an effective way of solving it. Visualize successfully solving your problem and go over it in your head many times, performing each detailed step successfully until you feel confident that you can perform the solution in reality. When you actually do it, it will seem easy because it will feel like you have experienced it before. Furthermore, incorporate yoga as well as deep breathing and isometric exercises in your schedule, on a daily basis. Lie on your back, inhale through your nose as your press your stomach out, hold your breath, and then exhale through your mouth. Repeat this breathing exercise for a couple of times until you feel relaxed. Yoga also helps you stretch and loosen tension in your back, calves, shoulders and neck areas. Isometric exercises is also good for relaxation because it helps relieve overall body tension. Moreover, find a quiet place to mediate, whether in your bedroom, watching a relaxing video on television, in a gym class, or at your religious institution. Sit quietly and try to focus on something in front of you. Start chanting to yourself a positive phrase that brings you peace and comfort. If you are meditating at home, you can focus on a lighted white candle as well as use a rosary for counting and keeping track of the amount of times that you chanted the phrase. Consider taking a Tai Chi class at the gym because it will help you focus and relax. Other classes include aerobic exercises, kickboxing classes, and treadmill walking or jogging. Such aerobic exercise helps relieve stress and tension similar to an overall body massage. Running, jogging, or brisk walking on a treadmill as well as kickboxing classes are all good aerobic exercises that help you unwind and sleep well at night.
As you learn to relax, eat healthy but light food from the four food groups of the Food Pyramid. Just try to avoid, or, at least, drink a minimum amount of caffeine and alcohol or eat a minimum amount of salt and sugar. Also, do not take any protein supplements. Just live a simple and clean life, eating natural, light and healthy food.
And, finally, don't forget to get, at least, eight hours of sleep per night. In order to sleep well, try not to nap during the daytime as well as do not drink any caffeinated products in the evenings. As you lay in bed, make a habit of reading a good book in order to help you relax before bedtime.
