HINDUS ASK MALTA TO REPLACE RELIGION IN SCHOOL

Hindus have asked Malta to replace the subject of “religion” with “comparative religion” in its public primary and secondary schools.

According to Constitution of Malta (Chapter I, Article 2, Item 3): “Religious teaching of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Faith shall be provided in all State schools as part of compulsory education.”

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that under the subject of “religion”, Malta should come up with a comparative religion class teaching basics of all major world religions, including the viewpoint of non-believers.

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, argued that opening-up the Malta children to major world religions and non-believers’ viewpoint would make them well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened citizens of tomorrow.

It also made a good business sense to know the beliefs of “others” in a global community. Moreover, students should have knowledge of the entire society to become full participants in the European community.

Maltese islands were first settled reportedly in 5,200 BCE. Few European countries have such concentrated architecture, history, and beaches in so small an area as Malta. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.

I do not find anything uncomfortable if the STUDENTS of Malta are taught Religious teaching of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Faith. It is not clear why anyone from the Hindus wants to interfere in the religious affairs of Malta. I do not know if there is any provision in the Maltese constitution that disallows people having faith in any religion other than Christianity and even in atheistic schooling. I do not know if academic discourses on the study of comparative religions or on the emergence of different religious concepts on different regions of the earth have been declared unlawful in the soil of Malta. If it is not anything such, I must beg to request my friends not to demand for any change in the school-curriculum in respect of religious teachings. Let people of Malta live in peace by the treasure of their heart.
