Mamata Banerjee means business

Those who travel by trains can be rest assured that Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee means business – she wants to make those who travel by Indian Railways feel it to be a matter of pride. She has set in motion a system where surprise checks would be carried out on the catering system in the railways to ensure better quality of food served, cleanliness of the pantry car and its surroundings and hygienic methods of handing the foodstuff. Her team has made a start with the Gitanjali Express on 1st September and their findings would not be palatable to the catering staff.

Apart from inaugurating new routes and renaming stations of the Kolkata Metro Rail, Mamata Banerjee wants to have a Women’s wing of the Railway Protection Force. Let us hope that she focuses her attention also on the toilets in the compartments – most of these need facelift and could do with repairs and modifications.

When you travel long distances by train in Australia, they provide not only toilets but a hot shower cubicle as well. Where you are sitting inyour booked seat, the seats in front of you have pockets where you willfind towels made of paper but like netting and they are recyclable. Theyare provided free by the Australian Railways for one use only, Packed inplastic. When you have your shower and use it, it does dry you and you can put it in the plastic packing and trash it in a waste bin on the train or you can take it home and use it to compost your garden with it because it's recyclable recycled paper. 8/9/2009.
