Avoid wastage – use doggy bags

London : United Kingdom | 3 months ago

Every year the amount of food wasted in British hotels and restaurants add up to a huge staggering figure 3 million tons. This could be drastically reduced if the customers take away the uneaten but paid for food in doggy bags – this system is quite popular in America. The leftovers could be packed in attractive cardboard boxes so that it would look like a gift box. However, many people have reservations but diners should overcome the embarrassment and restaurateurs should try to win over their customers. It would be for a good cause.

Yes it is very popular here in America. Restaurant portions are so big that you can usually eat and still have enough left over for lunch the next day. I really feel I get my money's worth when I can take some home for another meal.

actually, once i was embarassed to get the leftover packed but my wife asked the waiter to pack it up ... back home i realised that it was a sensible thing to do ... why waste the food ...

There wouldn't be any waste if they gave us reasonable sized portions and didn't assume that eveyone ate like a linebacker on a football team.

That's right! they should take out the left food instead of adding up to the waste!

actually first timers in any restaurant are affected most ... when the number of members are less and they do not know the quantities that would be served, it results in excess ... there are some restaurants where the waiter helps out by telling you if the quantity on one plate would be too much for one but reasonable for two ...

Restuarant food is expensive and I am quite unashamed in asking for a doggy bag. If you are paying twice what it is worth, you might as well get two meals from it. I do agree that portions should be better regulated. A grossly overloaded plate can be quite off putting.

This happens all the time in the Philippines. People eat in restaurantsand if they can't eat the food because it's too much, they ask the staffin the restaurant for a plastic bag in which they pack all the food into. Eatable food is later reheated and eaten at home, the scraps aarethen fed to the dogs, cats or pigs but wastage occurs mainly when thetourists come and buy more than they can eat, they leave the food on thetables to be dumped. There are lot of beggars hanging around all the time, if they can't eat the food they should give it away to the beggars who would gorge themselves on it. The beggars will even take the bones and what not. 8/9/2009.
