Ragging of a fresher in New Delhi

Yet another case of the ragging of a fresher in a New Delhi college has been reported. Can physical torture be any method of getting introduced in a civilized society? That is what a 17-year old boy had to face. The introduction is supposed to be a ritual to make the fresher feel at ease in a new environment – not one where he is humiliated and has to carry the scars for life. This young man, the son of an auto rickshaw drive, was a student of an Industrial Training Institute and had straggled to get his education. But he was made to strip and then beaten on his private parts by a group of seniors. They did it on the pretext of introduction. Police have made arrests but like all ragging cases, this too might get buried

What an aweful ritual. I can't believe college students subject their selves to these rituals. I also can't believe that any with a concience would do such a thing to another human being. It is just sick.

It does happen in the Philippines also, they call it hazing to initiate a student into a secret fraternity. About 10 years ago a group of male students in UP DILIMAN in Manila killed a law student by convincing him that he has to submit to being bashed by lumps of wood and planks beforehe could join the fraternity. He was a bright student, may have been bitbrighter than them and could have become a lawyer except they bashed himto death and people went to prison for murder as a result. Two years ago a similar thing happened to another student in the same universitybut the student survived because somebody saw a group with lumps of wood bashing him. They were all arrested for hazing and they are stillin jail without a trial because it was deemed attempted murder. Teachers were reprimanded by the national government for turning theirbacks and allowing these things to happen. One of the teachers said, we take no notice of these things because they happen a lot and they are usually harmless. The survivor was scared for life. 8/9/2009.
