It was on 1st September 1939, exactly 70 years ago, that Adolf Hitler’s army invaded Poland and set in motion the worst war that involved practically all Nations. In a way, Hitler should be given due credit because if he had not declared war, Mankind might not have progressed to the extent that it has. The war compelled the warring Nations to depend on improved technologies and innovations and warfare took on a new meaning as more and more weapons of mass destruction were invented for the basic purpose of killing. Fighter aeroplanes, submarines, warships, amphibious tanks, artillery, missiles were all inventions of the war. The War went on for nearly 6 years up to 1945 and saw annihilation of Jews by the Nazis (Hitler’s army) in concentration camps. No one was spared – husbands were torn away from wailing wives, children were tortured as it they were animals. More than 60 million people lost their lives in the 6-year war.
