The Andean Hillstar, also known as a Hummingbird, reside mostly in the Andes of southwest Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile and northwestern Argentina.
They are often found near habitation in puna grasslands. The females are territorial when breeding and while building nests. They survive the sub zero temperatures of the high Andes by going into a mini hibernation at night. They roost where the rising sun rays will catch and warm them into waking again.
The males are not territorial and move around in the nearby grassland.
