BERLIN, Germany - Twenty years ago, change swept over central and eastern Europe. Soviet style communist rules were overthrown in a mere matter of months, while communism had prevailed for decades.
The fall of the Berlin Wall opened the doors for German reunification. Peaceful rallies followed in Czecholslovakia and Bulgaria. The communist regime in Romania was violently overthrown, and its head of state executed.
The revolutions of 1989 marked the end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The year 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of this monumental happening, causing tremendous change at the end of the 20th century.
Now that communism has been destroyed, the world is safer, richer, and offers more freedom.
