Household Blinds & Shades Killing People

It seems that window-treatment manufacturers are now being associated with the term "murderers" because of the three recent deaths that have resulted from three children strangling themselves with the attached cords. The window treatment manufacturers have officially recalled an astounding 5.5 million blinds and shades due to the tragedies. Statistics show that one child dies each month in the U.S. from window cord strangulation.

The companies recalling the blinds and shades are made or imported by Lewis Hyman and Vertical Land. Interestingly enough these companies have a history of recalling these types of products from past deaths of infants due to stranglings from the cords. Lewis Hyman recalled around 4.2 million roll-up blinds in 2007 because a 1 year-old infant strangled himself after the blind cord fell into his crib and the infant became entangled in it resulting in his death.

Lewis Hyman will also be recalling approximately 600,000 Roman shades after a 13-month-old boy in 2008 got his head caught in between the cord and cloth on the back of the shade. The list of tragic deaths due to strangulation goes on for miles and its unbelievable that these products weren't taken off the market earlier. Its hard to completely fault these manufacturers, but when the death of an infant happens due to product default, the manufacturer will always be the one blamed even though bad parenting could be called into question.

If I may ask, is this an occupational hazard of the industry as a whole, or is this hyper-reactive sensitivity of recent origin? I have to ask because, if it is a recent phenomenon, then I'm completely ready to blame the scandal-mongering news media that has developed in the US in the last three decades. Playing on peoples' fears, their irrational phobias, or just blowing a small-but-sad personal tragedy up into an imagined national nightmare for no better reason than to garner the largest possible audience. This is the news media of America in the first decade of the 21st century.I'm hoping and praying that it's all a phase that we'll soon grow out of, still, ....

When Window BLIND Manufacturers 1st started making them with the strings that were strangling small children, they were advised by the U.S. Health & Welfare for Children to put a LARGE NOTICE in every box of BLINDS that were sold, to try to avert these tragedies that are still continuing today. That was back in the 50's--there is no one looking out for the children anymore since the Window BLIND Manufacturers are NO LONGER PUTTING THIS LARGE NOTICE INTO ALL THE BOXES THAT ARE SOLD TODAY!! WHEN WILL PARENTS PAY ATTENTION TO CORDS THAT ARE TOO CLOSE TO THE NECKS OF THEIR VERY SMALL CHILDREN!!PLEASE DO NOT PUT CRIBS ANYWHERE NEAR A WINDOW WITH A BLIND THAT HAS A CORD THE CHILD COULD GET THEIR NECK STRANGLED WITH!! PLEASE LEARN HOW TO USE THIS KIND OF COMMON SENSE TO PREVENT THE LOSS OF YOUR CHILD'S LIFE!! This was my major concern for my 3 children!!

We don't have blinds like that but I can say the same about lights thatare installed in some ancient houses that use a cord from the ceiling topull and put the light on or off. Although they went out of fashion manyyears ago, they are coming back in lighting shops as new style lighting.Long cord hangs from the ceiling can entangle and strangle you. A friendof mine had one in Australia but the cord broke. I dismantled it and installed an ordinary light switch with electrical wiring hooked up and tacked to the door post. While doing the job some drunk living inthe next room walked by sipping at a glass of beer and said, I see youbroke it in a drooling way. Yes was the answer. The drunk put the beerout towards my friend and said, have one on me and followed up saying,I PULL MINE BUT NOT TOO HARD. Get the joke? The meaning is he doesn'tpull the cord in his room too hard for it to break. Some other guy came by and heard that. He said, you dirty thing, you pull yours but not too hard and we all had a laugh about it. 27/8/2009.
