Galilie Galileo and 400 years of telescopes

It was 400 years ago today that Galileo showed his invention, the telescope, to the world. It was a device that helped bridge distances and that gradually became an indispensable part of astronomy. Based on his observation of stellar bodies, Galileo propounded several theories (the Moon’s surface was not smooth, Jupiter and Venus had moons etcetera) that were not accepted in his days – he was kept in house imprisonment. The telescope is a must not only in astronomy but even in space exploration and simple navigation over the oceans. The simple ones with glass lenses on either end have been upgraded to the radio telescopes.
