By the time of 1972 to 1981, during the Marcos Regime, people of the Philippines has been ruled under the Martial Law. August 21, 1983, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino was assassinated and was considered a hero by the Filipinos. Year 1986, People Power I, revolutions at the streets of Edsa, an event that marks in the history of not only our country but of the world.
Filipinos were commended by many other nations for being united fighting for democracy.
One woman stands out. Corazon "Cory" Aquino, the wife of Ninoy, by a Snap Election was elected as the President of the Philippines, bringing the light of democracy to her people.
I was born on the year 1991, at least 5 years after this history. But yet, I've come to realize that "something" I can be proud of as for being a Filipino, especially at times like this.
Philippines, at present times, after Cory's death, the public cried and wept. Some politicians cheered. One big name compelling the pursuance of Charter-Change (Cha-Cha) is now gone, BUT NOT FOREVER GONE.
On her burial day, people from the different sides of the country gathered at the streets awakening the Edsa Revolution's atmosphere again. They walked on the streets to extend their condolences to Aquino family and somehow, to protest.
As I was watching some of those scenes in the television, my nationalistic aura came within me. Even with my young mind, I have understood the significance of all these things. Though I am only 18, I now realized the legacy that a Corazon "Cory" Aquino left.
Even in death, Cory still makes an action -an action that brings people together.
I thought to myself, they were just doing "ningas-kugon" and there will be no consistency on what they're doing to express for their rights. But then I realized, "No". It's a simple way of letting the others know what they are fighting for -GENUINE DEMOCRACY.
Genuine Democracy -that's what Cory has fight and struggled for.
For a while, I came to see the other angle of Cory's personality. She's definitely not just a politician. She's not just an icon for democracy. She is a mother -a mother to her children, an "ilaw ng tahanan".
I wonder how Cory has gone through all of these pains and sweet sacrifices.
Suddenly, I have whispered unto myself the following words:
"Cory, hindi ka nag-iisa". (You are not alone, Cory).
You died but your legacy will remain. I shall be telling your history to my kids in the future so as to inspire them to become "critical and responsible" citizens of our country.
In that time, I shall be following your footsteps -a responsible mother, loving and loyal wife and an active citizen. I may not become a President of this country, but in my own ways, through my writing, I can continue to express the every Filipino's battle cry for their rights. It's all using your freedom with responsibility.
I will write to serve my country, not to PR somebody -envelopmental journalism. (For God's sake!)
I will someday, make a good legacy that will be remembered even after my own death.
