In the whole debate over Universal Health Care, many opponents have cited examples of extended wait times for treatment, refusal of treatments, and babies delivered on sidewalks, all of these points are valid, but what about privacy? As it stands right now, our medical records are private. In fact, if you start to see a new doctor, you have to sign a release form that allows them to retrieve your medical history from your previous provider. Now if the government is running, or overseeing our health care system, what does that say for our medical records? It would seem to me that the government would have unrestricted access to such things. This is information that the government can and probably will use against us. Suppose you were treated for an addiction, possibly to an illegal substance. You were never caught with the drugs, but knew you needed to clean yourself up. You got the treatment. You are now clean and still have no criminal record. Well if the government gets a hold of your medical history, that treatment is on there. You now have a criminal record. Now let's suppose that you like many people struggle with your weight, blood pressure, and/or cholesterol. Your regular check ups will serve as progress reports to see if you are compliant with the federally mandated diet designed for you. Tax payers are footing the bill for your medical treatment so you better be in tiptop shape.
Many people are swayed to support things like Universal Health Care out of a duty to take care of those in need. The problem is that when you place that job of caregiver on the government, you are giving it a tremendous amount of power, that at some point will be used against you.
