Too Much Sugar

I was diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic in February of this year, and as I learn the keys to controlling the disease, it has become apparent that the food we eat is hardly healthy. As I peruse the snack box at my job, I do a little label investigation to see what the carb count is. The lowest carbohydrate filled snack has 22 grams. For those of you who dont know, diabetics should generally stay in the 120 grams of carbs a day range, most of which come at meals. I have resorted to bringing my own snacks of raw almonds and granola with a smattering of vegetables here and there.

You have to wonder why the people that were living before us didn't have as many health issues and stayed more fit. My theory is they didnt' cook with much refined sugars, and in order to survive they had to work the land and reap what they sowed.

If you are a diabetic living in our sugar filled society let me know some ideas of foods to munch on.

HAPPY LIVING!

Your article caught my eye as I was also diagnosed with Type II in February, 2009. I'm controlling it with one medication currently and seem to be doing well. I eat walnuts and pecans as well as almonds and a few peanuts for snacks. I don't eat much bread anymore and totally avoid cookies, pies, cakes and the like. I eat a few sugar-free treats now and then, but not very often. I work from home so snacks are always conveniently nearby, but surprisingly, since February I've managed to lose about 35 pounds by modifying what I eat and cutting back quite a bit. I also try to exercise daily on an elliptical machine. My spouse is currently on Weight-Watchers - but they look at foods a lot differently than do diabetics. We cook a lot with Splenda and use it also as a sweetener in coffee and juices. Thanks for writing the article and good luck with controlling your own Type II. If I think of anything else, I will write you an email. Also, I've added you as a Fan and hope you can take a look at one or two of my articles and possibly do the same. Thanks!

Ya its hard to find good snacks when you have to think about the carb count all the time. That and my wife is a big proponant of not eating any fake sugars so that makes it hard as well. Luckily I like iced tea with no sweetener. I have lost probably 60 lbs since I found out I had diabetes which was more a mix of eating healthier and working out a lot more. Thanks for your comment and I hope to hear more from you on this topic as we both discover new ways of managing. Have a great day!
