According to NBCWashington.com, David Ashby isn’t your average middle school student.
The 14 year old from College Park, Florida doesn’t want to just “make the world a better place,” he is actually doing something about it - by reaching out to homeless kids one step at a time.
Ashby, hoping to shine a light on the 1.5 million homeless kids living in the United States, decided to walk from Orlando, Florida to the District of Columbia. The 8th grader’s 1,100-mile trek concluded in front of the White House on Sunday.
Along the way, he visited dozens of shelters, slept by a roadside, and ate out of garbage cans in order to experience their daily challenges. He also met with other children to provide inspiration and listen to their stories.
Of course he was chaperoned by a family member but the reality is that a lot of the kids he hopes to save don’t have that option.
“It has been an adventure for sure,” he told the Orlando Sentinel on Friday. “I'm tired, yet still determined. I think about the kids I have met and their stories and the hard times that they have had and it keeps me going.”
Ashby hoped to meet with President Obama but no word from the White House yet.
