Would you order these restaurant food items if their calorie count was posted on the menu?

If you don't want to wait for chain restaurants to post their calorie count, now, as of last week, you can get the nutrition information for restaurants in your area with the Los Angeles, CA-headquartered GoodFoodNearYou – the popular local search for restaurant nutrition including calories, carbs, and fat – became available last week to download for free in the Lifestyle category of the Android Market, accessible on Android devices.

Android is the 5th most used smart phone platform in the U.S., and is the third mobile platform to include GoodFoodNearYou in its free application offering. Across all platforms GoodFoodNearYou has had over 337,685 unique users perform a local search in over 5,161 U.S. cities since launch in Spring 2009.

GoodFoodNearYou includes searchable nutrition information for over 250,000 U.S. restaurant locations, and is accessible on the web at and on BlackBerry, iPhone, and most recently Android.

“The Android platform represents the forefront of mobile usability. We are excited to leverage the capabilities of Android to offer our free local search for restaurant menu nutrition information to Android users,” says Nick Desai CEO of Global Fitness Media developers of GoodFoodNearYou and FitOrbit.

While GoodFoodNearYou expands its mobile reach and continues to be the most comprehensive free public resource for restaurant nutrition information, a national debate heats up over whether all restaurant menus should be required by law to include the calorie counts of meals.

“Location based search is first and foremost about giving the user instant access to the most relevant information given their current interests and situation. We continue to enhance GoodFoodNearYou with more relevant information including the nutrition information for independent restaurants, local mom and pop favorites, and chains,” continues Desai.

GoodFoodNearYou developers cite the Android platform as exemplifying that usability, personalization, and choice make for a great user experience. “We are especially impressed that Android allows the user to run multiple applications simultaneously," says Peter Ng, Director of Mobile Operations of Global Fitness Media developers of GoodFoodNearYou and FitOrbit.

"For example, the GoodFoodNearYou application takes the user to Google Maps to pin point a restaurant location on the map. Android’s ability to run multiple apps at the same time allows the user to go back and forth between the map and the restaurant nutrition without exiting the application. This unique capability allows for a seamless user experience, which is a fundamental quality we install in all of our mobile applications,” Peter Ng explained.

GoodFoodNearYou is a location-based search to discover the nutrition information for food at restaurants near you. Currently, GoodFoodNearYou has restaurant food and menu nutrition information for over 250,000 U.S. restaurant locations. Find good food near you on the web at GoodFoodNearYou.com. The GoodFoodNearYou mobile application is optimized for popular devices including iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, Blackberry Curve, Blackberry Pearl, Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Storm, and most recently Android. GoodFoodNearYou was launched in Spring 2009. Follow the company on Twitter @GoodFoodNearYou

Even though I am not a calorie counter, I try to avoid junk food like McDonalds and only eat it rarely because it is so patently bad for you. I am a smoker and am well aware of the consequences of doing something you know is bad for you simply because you like it or because you are addicted. But eating badly is just taking away from the joy of life. I like nice greasy food sometimes, but good healthy food should be made at home, not bought at food outlets whose main concern is profit, not taste.
