Welcome to Kumartuli – the town of Potters

Welcome to Kumartuli – the town of Potters. These potters are skilled artisans who create magic with simple clay and straw. They are at this moment the busiest persons in the area called Kumartuli which has been earmarked for creating the idols of Goddess Durga. On an average, 12 to 13,000 idols are created and these grace the pandals of not only Kolkata but other areas within India and even abroad. These idols are eco friendly ones and are results of artistic thoughts that find expression in the idols – the skeleton of bamboo and straw are coated with layers of clay and, finally, decorated in gorgeous dresses. These are then carted away to the pandals and worshipped by devotees. At the end of the four day festivities, these idols are immersed in the Ganges.
