California: The "Lockheed" Fire in Santa Cruz County continues to burn 5,036 acres and is threatening 250 residents in the communities of Swanton and Bonny Doon. the fire has already destroyed 2 outbuildings. It fire started Wednesday August 12th at approximately 7:16pm and as of 8:00pm tonight, the fire has been declared to be only 15% contained.
As Cal Fire firefighters battle the blaze, the weather and steep terrain have made it difficult to get a handle on it. As it moves towards the community, 2,400 people have been evacuated from there homes.
The total fire personnel on the Lockheed Fire is 1,548 (570 of which are Cal Fire) There are 234 engines, 17 fire crews, 22 dozers, and 17 water tenders. Aircraft have also been involved with battling the flames with retardant drops.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the cost to date for this fire is $2.1 million. The Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency for California because of the various wildfires going on at this time. He's asking for federal aide and plans on touring the Lockheed Fire tomorrow.
