An uncle and four aunts of a family were cleared of charges of murder of their niece – the verdict was that the intention was not to kill her but to drive out the evil demons that had entered her body. They were not excorcists. Moses, the mother of two, was suffering from some kind of mental disorder and her family members kept feeding her water through her mouth and nose in an effort to lift the curse (or makutu). The family believed that Moses was possessed by a demon because another member of the family had stolen a statue of a concrete lion from outside a hotel.
