In my recent job search, I've come across more intern postings than ever before.
I have never seen so many companies wanting to hire interns. And what's more interesting, is that these companies are hiring for positions that would normally be a paid position. Such as an administrative assistant or graphic designer or even customer service.
One of the most obvious reasons interns are becoming so popular is because of the economy. Most of the companies I'm seeing that are hiring interns are either start-ups and can't yet afford it or business is slow and they're unable to pay just yet but need someone as soon as possible.
An internship used to be solely for college students, to get a real view of the working world in their chosen field. But lately, it's becoming OK to hire interns without requiring the potential candidate to be enrolled in college for school credit.
Which is great! Why do I say it's great? Because now is the chance to step into the career you've always wanted without having to be in school to get it.
Internships usually only require 2-4 days a week of your time and usually only for a few hours, very few are for the entire day. What's really great about this is that you can still have a paying job while going after that career you really want.
When you intern, you get your foot into the door. The internship could be getting coffee for the boss and filing papers, or it could be working directly with clients. As long as you're a hard worker, pleasant and willing to learn, they'll take notice and consider you for a paying position. Any intern can lead to a paying position if you're the right candidate.
Companies are wise to hiring un-paid interns. They get to see if they'd be a good fit for their company before making the decision to hire them.
It seems whenever I go to a job interview for an internship, the person interviewing me always says, "I started out in an internship position, was hired by that company and look where I am today."
Internships may not pay money, but at least you're not spending thousands of dollars at a college to get the same knowledge and experience.
So take that internship and start living your dream! While, of course, keeping your job on the side to make ends-meat. You won't regret it.
